Hey everyone! I'm DJ JAZZY! Want to know what Shakira will be going as for Halloween this year? A Mexican or Sugar Skull! This is my twist on how to do your hair and makeup for a Spooktacular time trick or treating this year!
First step is to make sure your hair is brushed and has no knots. Then we are going to part the hair into two sections. I start the part from the middle and work my way down the side. Your part should start behind one ear and continue across the head to the other ear. I use a hair tie to tie it off so I can keep it out of the way.
Next we are going to part the front section of the hair. I line up my finger to Shakira’s eyebrow and work my way back to the previous part. And then do the same to the other side. Make sure both parts are as a straight as possible and in line with each other so that we have a centred even amount of hair on top. I get Shakira to hold the top part for me so I can tie away the left over hair so its out of the way.
Then we are going to do one more part straight down the centre. We are going to have two braids in this section of hair so I’m going to tie off one side so it’s easier for me to braid.
Creating a tight braid is very hard so to make sure all the little hairs at the hair line are pulled in, I use a bit of hair spray.
I grab a small section of hair and divide into three to get started on the braid. I use a hair tie to tie off and then repeat the same process on the other side.
Its optional to use a donut hair accessory, but I highly suggest it as it will make your buns look fuller. I grab the hair and put it through the donut hole and then pin the donut down into place. I grab the pulled through hair and place it over the donut to cover it completely and then with a hair tie I tie the hair at the bottom of the donut just like you would do for a pony tail. With the left-over hair I wrap it around and add a few pins to make sure it is secure.
Then add hairspray to make sure everything stays in place. I love the messy bun look, so don’t worry if its not completely perfect! Our next step is adding some glitter. I purchased some hair and body glue, so that the glitter would stick. Make sure not to use any other glue in your hair such as craft glue, as that is not made for hair, and we do not want to have any problems! So hairspray will work just as good and You can even buy glitter hair spray too.
I apply the hair glue straight down the centre part with my finger. Shakira’s favourite colour is blue so I have some blue glitter and I just dip my finger in the glitter and apply its down the part as well. To make sure it stays in you can add hairspray on top at the end.
So here I have some blue eye shadow which I am going to apply at the tips of the hair, just for a faint colour to add effect. You can use coloured hairspray, hair chalk, there are many options. I’ve had to pour a little bit on my hand and then rub it in the hair and after I give it a little brush. Shakira loves this hair style!
And now we are ready to move on to the makeup!
You will need to apply some foundation to your face. You can use your hands or a brush but I am going to use my damp beauty blender and just dab it on the section that will be the non-skull side.
Next you will need some white face paint and with a brush just paint it on and try your best to spread it as evenly as possible. To create the half Mexican skull look with your brush stroke diagonally down the face and don’t worry if its not perfect.
Then you will need to create the bones in the neck. I don’t do a complete replication of the actual bones in your neck but you can always do that option if you would prefer.
Now with a black eyeliner pen, just draw along the outline of the white paint to make it really stand out and create that 3D effect. Make some parts of the line a bit thicker to really enhance the look.
For this next part you will need to create a circle around the eye. Fill the circle with whatever colour you desire. As I said before Shakira loves blue, and she has the blue glitter in her hair, so that’s the colour I am going to use. You can mix match to get a little whacky as well.
Next apply black eye shadow and lightly colour along the edges of the inner circle to create some depth. Also try to use separate brushes so you don’t mix all your colours up.
I have added a dramatic black wing on the eyes. This is super tricky, so this is an optional step.
Now to get that skull effect you will need to create two interlocking teardrop shapes on the nose.
We are going to do a bit of colouring in on the face to show the outline of the skull. I drew the outline with my eyeliner pen and then coloured it in with a brush and black face paint.
Then you will need to draw where skull bones meet on the cheek. This line is like a big wave. One on the top and one on the bottom that almost mirror each other. After you do that then colour in the middle and fade it out towards the mouth.
Next step draw a line on both sides of your lips to extend the mouth. Next you will need to draw some teeth. Use the pen lightly and take your time. Maybe look up some images online to see that shape of teeth to make it look more realistic.
Colour in the full lip with black lipstick and with the same eye shadow that I used on the eyes I have done a light blue layer on top to add some colour.
Then with the black eye shadow lightly go over your drawn teeth to give them more shape. Again, to create more depth with your black eye shadow go over your line across the face.
Then go over it again with some red eye shadow to give more of a effect.
With your black face paint colour in the left over spaces on the neck to highlight the bones. I'm not too worried about colouring the whole neck as Shakira has long hair.
Using you black eye shadow colour it in again to set the paint and give it more of a matte look. Then lightly go over the neck bones to create that 3D shape.
If you have light eyebrows like Shakira, you may have to colour them in lightly because they may get a little lost within the coloured circle. Even though I am not a professional hair dresser or face painter, I do love getting creating and I definitely encourage you to do the same!
